The First Step Is Admitting You Have A Problem....

My collection

I'm not really sure what the second step is.  My problem and I are in a good place right now, so I'm not really looking for a solution.  My husband, on the other hand, is getting a little annoyed with my obsessive milk jug and fruit container hoarding.  I've tried to explain to him the it's for the greater good of the garden, but he's still skeptical.  He'll be happier once we can start harvesting the fruits of my trash collection.

We tilled under the veggie garden this past week, but torrential downpours and the resulting mud kept me from planting out there.  But, thanks to my hoard, I was still able to sow seeds outdoors.

The collection put to good use.

For this week I've started more swiss chard, spinach and lettuce along with some cosmos.  I usually direct sow cosmos, but I thought I'd try containers this year.  Mostly because I have not yet built the garden beds that the cosmos are supposed to go in.

  1. I think I'm developing the same problem! :D

You said you started spinach! Yay! I need advice on spinach. I started some outside in a strawberry container at the same time that I started mustard greens. That was over two weeks ago. Nothing is going on with the spinach. Is that normal?

  2. I am glad you are putting those containers to good use. That's more than I can do:). It is nice to see spring has arrived to your blog header - great picture!

  3. I was looking at the picture and wondering what they would be for!
    Thanks for letting me know

  4. Eh, tell him it will only be a few more weeks and they can go in the garden proper. :) He needs to be zen about the big picture here. Those milk jugs are doing noone a bit of harm. :)

  5. sarah- I've had a lot of trouble with sowing spinach outdoors, too. I always get poor germination. This year I started some spinach indoors and got 100% germination. I wonder if spinach needs warmer temps to germinate than other cool season veggies? I know chard does. We'll see if my container sown spinach on the porch germinates....

Masha- Thanks! I was so over that dreary snowscape. Bring on spring!

Leontien- My husband wonders the same thing! He's much happier now that they're out of the house.

Jess- I try to get him to be more zen, but he's seen too many episodes of "Hoarders" on TV! ;)
