R.I.P. Rosemary

It appears my rosemary did not survive the winter.  This is not the first rosemary plant I have killed.  I doubt it will be the last.  They simply do not like NJ winters.  It's really just too cold and wet for a Mediterranean plant.  I've tried bringing them into the house for the winter, but they don't seem to like the house, either.

This one was actually two years old.  I had successfully overwintered it on the south side of the porch last year.  It was still alive as of the last snowstorm we had back in January, but at some point it gave up.  We've had some pretty hard freezes since then and without an insulating layer of snow it must have succumbed to the cold.

Good night, sweet rosemary.  You were too beautiful for this Earth.  Or, at least for New Jersey.......

  1. Isn't it funny how what thrives like a weed in one place (rosemary here in S. CA), struggles in another climate. I think that is the fun of gardening. I've finally started to come to terms with living without all the beautiful lush plants and flowers that can't make it in my hot dry climate.

  2. So sorry to hear about your Rosemary! I lost mine as well this year! One of my favorite evergreens that will most definitely be replaced. In the exact same spot as it was right next to the lawn, so when ever my hubby mowed he would snag a few branches and mow them too...mmm the yard would smell of rosemary for days, loved it!!

  5. Oh, I'm so sorry! Do you have a sunny window where you could keep a rosemary standard through the winter?

  6. Yes, they like it warm. Too bad, too. They overwinter here fine, but I still worry about them. You're right - they are not happy inside.

  8. I also have never been able to over winter Rosemary in New Jersey. But like you, I keep trying. Sooner or later we'll figure it out and share how we did it. It's too lovely not to keep trying!
